these umbrella companys do seem expensive ,and the tax advantage does not seem as attractive as it was ,when i did it i was with "dollor" and it worked great at the time ,if you are working for agencys its still a good ,quick way of getting your money ,as you get it not the tax man,as far as tax is concerned the taxman is happy because you have a legit pay slip ,so if maximum each week is the main objective then it works ,long term it may be more expensive ,as i said before some love this method and some hate it .i posted the details so bane can have a little look for his self,im not recomending the company.

As the original question was about VAT receipts:
Obviously you can't claim the VAT back unless you are VAT registered.
Regarding necessary business/trade expenditure - sure tools, workwear, fuel used for business purposes, telephone used for business purposes, vehicle repair & maintenance and any thing else you buy and use for business purposes.
Also include depreciation.
