Default Course advice needed

Hello all,

I'm new to this forum and would like some advice with regards to the various courses available and any recommendations you may have.

I'm 38 years old and have just moved back to the UK (North Wales) from Italy where I have spent the last twelve years. I would now like to make a change and am seriously considering training for a career as an electrician. In my situation as it is at the moment, the idea of some sort of fast track / intensive training course is the most attractive as I would like to get into employment in this field as soon as possible. Before any of you jump on my case, I do realize that one of these courses can no way make up for the years of time earned experience that are needed to become a good and competent tradesman. I do hope however that I can get the bare minimum in terms of training, practical experience and to pass the exams as well. I don't pretend to finish any course, however good it's supposed to be, and just go off and become a self employed domestic electrician either but would look to become part of a team where experience could be gained gradually from others and in practical terms.

I have spoken to one company - Access trade careers - Access Career Training
They propose a course split into 4 modules. The first two covering the part P full scope and the second two for the C&G 2382, 2392-10 and 2391-10.

Their take on it is that they will allow you to study for each module in your own time with the assistance of on of their 'Dedicated personal mentors',available on a freephone number in case you get stuck or need advice and then when you feel ready, book yourself in for five days training at their centre in Cardiff followed by the relative exam/tests. Once that's done you go home and get on with the next module. It sounds good to me because you can move at your own pace and be sure about the syllabus content but not cheap at almost 5.5K.

Have any of you had dealings with or heard of them ? I would be interested to hear any opinions of feedback whatsoever.

Would be very interested t hear of any other training companies/courses which ave a good rep and offer a quality service.

Thanks.

Help & Advice Needed

I've just found this thread started by Irishmalt who is asking about the same company but there is no conclusive information given by anyone who has been to do a course with them. If anyone has any further info to offer it would be most welcome as well as any other recommendations too.

Hi ct13,I recently visited Access Training and was considering an electrical qualification with them, their set up seems ok and the guy I met said there was a shortage of Domestic Electricians in Cardiff and that Employment Agencies were phoning up asking if they had any students that have completed their courses-maybe worth your while phoning a few Cardiff agencies up to see if this is the case!

Thanks for you reply, but the company in question is actually called Access Trade Careers (follow my link in the original post) which is different to Access Training. I have to now say that it does seem strange that Access Trade Careers, the trading name of Anglo Capital Ltd (A finance company!) with their training centre also in Cardiff should have such a similar name to the other, by all accounts, more established company.

I have since called Access training and am awaiting a call back. They also give you the opportunity to study at your own pace (within a maximum 2 year time frame) and first impressions were good.

Access Training are a very well established, independant, private training company, who have operated from a number of centres in Cardiff over a period of years.

Access Trade Careers is one trading arm of a very well established training company, specialising in a number of areas. They are an entriely seperate company from Access Training.

Access Training provide a number of courses accross the construction trades, which they provide both for their own students, and for students arriving from independant training brokers. This is common practice in the private training world. As such, Access Training provide both electrical and plumbing training for Access Trade Careers students in a training partnership.

As such, if you enrol with Access Trade Careers, you are contracting into their total training package (support, finance package etc), and Access Training will provide the technical training element of that package on behalf of Access Trade Careers.

The actual training you recieve is exactly the same (and of the same high quality) that you would recieve if you enroled with Access Training as one of our students.

Hope this clears up any confusion
