I am new to this forum but would like to change my career and become an electrician. I have received a whole lot of information for training from a company called Access Trade Careers who are saying that they will train me and cover Part P, C&G 2382, C&G 2392-10 & C&G 2391-10. They say that the course will cost £ 5470 plus accommodation at £120 per practical training session of which there are 5.
I would be grateful if I could get some feedback.

The course has commenced in Jan 08. It is a years course although this depends on the student they say. This will be a major career change as I am 40 an have been in the shipping & transport field fo the last 20 odd years. Any suggestions would be great.

Well. Don't rush. There are LOADS of these training centres. You have to shop and ask around for the best prices and reputations.

At your age (No offence) I doubt your wanting to spend 3yrs at college so I presume this is why your thinking of going down this route?

I have just returned to the UK and was looking at doing one of these courses but, to be honest, the prices put me off. You will be getting quoted anything between 4-6 grand. It's a lot of money to lay out and then you have your tools on top of that plus no guarantees of work at the end of it (I'm not trying to put you off. Just stating the facts as I, personally, see it).

I suppose it all comes down to how much you want this and why you want to be an electrician.

Don't think your age will work against you. Personally I think if anything, it'll help. Life experience, emotional maturity etc.

Are you wanting to become a "Full" electrician (which basically means all types of work. Commercial/Industrial/Domestic), in which case you will need the C&G2330 or would you prefer domestic work only? If the latter then you should look into the EAL Domestic Installer course.

Bane, whilst i mostly agree with your comments - you dont NEED 2330 for commercial / industrial work. You dont NEED anything, other than competence / and or appropriate supervision.

I dont have 2330 and worked extensively accross many aspects of this industry

and i know a few lads who are in a similar position to this fellow, who have done similar courses (EAL DEI etc) then landed jobs as mates in industrial.and or commercial.

I would ideally want to go for the Full Electrician side. My main worry is finding the work and although the training company have said that they have a recruitment department within their their set up, I am the eternal sceptic.

What are the realistic availability for newly qualified electricians in the South east ie Oxfordshire?

It all depends really. I know newly qualified sparks who have sent over 200 applications and no luck. Then I see others who just walk into a job. Best way forward seems to be getting a job as you train at college and all of a sudden you become eminently more employable
