12v down lighters ( fault )

Hi all
Problem !!!

12 by 12v down lighters contolled by one switch,all have there own transformer.only one light is working out of the 12 lamps i only had my volt stick with me in van when i nipped round ,i dropped all lights out of ceiling and checked volts up to transformer using volt stick all showing volts on line !! ( could not prove neutral) I did not have my multi tester with me so i could not actually check for actual volts at feed of transformers and load side of transformers it seems to me unlikely that all the transformers have gone my only reason is that a neutral has popped out some where in the circuit i do not like fitting these kind of lights because of the hassle they give so i have not had much experiance with them has any one got any ideas ??

Which was the one light that was working...1st, 5th, 10th????? were you able to tell????

can not gain access from above at time so can not judge where abouts in the circuit it is

Did the customer say if they all went out all at once or have they been going out one by one over a period of time???

I personally hate LV lights and it wouldn't surprise me if 11 out of the 12 trannies had packed up.

the customer has informed me tha by banging the ceiling some of the lights will come back on i also will not fit lv downlighters

Sounds like a definate loose connection there somewhere than mate, probably in a joint box somewhere.

As you said best start dropping fittings and get the old voltage indicators out.

Have a look at the lamp holders LV ones give out so easily, but lights coming on when people walk upstairs sounds like a bad connection, When you get access to upstairs try looking for a JB in the middle of the room where the existing light fitting may have been.

builder wired them in so i can not get to the main jbs with the fairey chain only the little jb supplied with the fittings on the feed side of the trannie looks like i have got to lift the floor boards above in bedroom to gain access there must be at least 24 jbs up there at a guess

the first light? try the JB doing the working light.

yes penny i assume that the light on is the 1st from the( jb with switch wire) i have line volts at all light fittings but could not confirm neutral return as only had volt stick with me could neutral have dropped out from jb feeding the second light hence knock out all the rest ?? and just confirm i should start checking from the working light

Yep that would be my conclusion and yes start from the working light, you'll find it easy enough when you start looking, good luck.

fault finding !!!

drop lights out from ceiling and check volts on feed side of trannie to confirm line and neutral are present

check volts on load side of trannie

if no volts on load side of trannie replace it ( assuming volts present on feed side )

if no neutral on feed side of trannie check jbs one by one from working light to i loose volts to confirm jb with dodgy connects

Personally I would just drop the working light first, check the JB if there are no lose connections carry on with what you described.

You may be in a spot of bother then mate......
