Hi all. I am getting hassled from my boss about how long it takes to do a pir on a db. We think he is going to try to get us to do this on price work. We feel that 8 to 10 circuits a shift would be about right but If This is way out I can feel retributions already. The install is commercial office type environment on shutdown / out of hours any advice from the testing people would be appreciated thanks

depends on what you find. if you find problems, then your sampling should be increased.
i dont mind testing my own work, or charging clients for testing, but i wont do it for large comapanies, as you are pressurised into rushing, and i refuse to sign my name to anything that may be unsafe. Even lads i have worked with have said things like, it shouldnt take that long to test that circuit ect (about another colleauge) so there is always pressure from somewhere.

If you sdon take this job on price, do not cut corners, as in the end it is you that is liable.

Yet again you have stumbled on to the big con in our industry where guys and companies are churning out 4 if not more 6 way DBs in one day Yes we know they are not getting it done right , Yes we know its your signature on the documentation, Yes we know that our East European cousins are flooding into this , Yes we know they will not be here in 5 years when or if things go wrong, and Yes we know the registration companies know whats going on and we also know they are sitting on their hands when it comes to policing or setting a set time and Yes we know they are quite happy to take the registration money and make more selling you documentation and training. Sadly the only way this will get sorted is when the death rate goes up but right now in this environment there is not a government even willing to come down on this in fact they will do the exact opposite and call for more de-regulation and Yes I know this is not right hence why my Megger 1553 sits in the back of my motor gathering dust because I just will not compete with the £70 a house guys.

Here here oldtimer I've been thinking and saying this for years about the constant deregulation of our industry and the profit driven pressures on testers. How long does a pir take?......How long is a piece of string?.....Too many factors to take into account but at the end of the day if you're being pressured tell them as I've done in the past that you'll test as fast as they like but they can then put THEIR name at the bottom of the sheet!!! And it's also worth mentioning that you should report them to the union if they are a member company of either the SJIB or the JIB as price work is NOT allowed unless they involve the union to hammer out the deal!!!

Yes its scary times for all. I work for the company though an agency I am fine testing new installs its pir work thats a bit limited the only time Ive done it was in a school where three quarters got rebuilt and the rest was an extention 5 years old that got hooked up with the new build but it was just tested no time pressure. I feel if I say yes I can test x amount in one shift then it cant get done Ill be out the door and bye byed.

jar: I know how you feel mate and it's not easy saying no but if they are trying to pressure you into doing something unsafe then try telling them that under the electricity at work regulations 1989 and backed by the Health and Safety Act 1974, under law YOU are the duty holder and YOU alone will decide how to test this installation and if they get heavy handed about it make sure you have a witness and report them to the Health and Safety Executive and if you're a member of the union also as they will back you to the hilt.

Hi I dont think hes going to be too bad about this weve been changing main boards in his workshop and there was a few scary doubled up things and a fire. Thats how we are now involved the client wants a full pir in all there workshops I think my boss just wants a guide to help him price it and if I bounced it off you guys it might give me an answer for him. There are only two testers with the company so I am likely to be the one running all over the shop trying to get this done its going to be mission imposible and I dont think you can price testing you can only give an estimate and then a bill.

you can do 2 PIR's a day max that is a basic house and in the perfect sinario Empty occupied house then could take you all day how often do we see PIR's done fast , the visual PIR ye right seen them done in 5 mins walk in walk out sticker on CDU £60 thank you very much , this is a subject i will be taking up with the ESC at harrogate , i hope they have a seat as i may need one !!!

We had this discussion during our NICEIC inspection lasr week. The inspector asked the MD how long he would have allowed for testing one of the installations we had looked at previously. The MD answered 2 days to which the inspector looked at me for my opinion, my response was i don't put times on any sort of testing it takes what it takes which in this case was 7 days. The inspector then said to me right answer.

Becoming a nightmare area to work in. Ive turned down one job for PIR's on occupied domestic dwellings, the company was booking in 4 jobs a day minimum. I just said I won't be turning up, even though it was a long contract.

Had an interview the other week but never got a sniff, maybe because they knew I know you can not do the amount of test & inspections they need and want you to do.

Its all coming down to companies taking on large contracts, taking a big lump of the money then finding an idiot who's prepared to go out there and rush about cutting corners to earn a wage and take on the duty and responsibility at the same time.

Ive decided to keep away from PIR's unless I'm at the top of the pecking order to earn a living and do the job right.

I hope they are not working that day I had to do a job and I thought go after lunch but when I got there the staff were having their lunch the smell drove me nuts
