Default Does anyone else short of work?

Hi all,

The reason I'm posting is we're an electrical firm with four employees based in the Bath/Somerset/Wiltshire area, doing commercial, residential and industrial work.

The reason I'm posting is until now we've always been very busy, never had to spend any money on advertising until about two weeks ago when the work literally completely dried up. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so is it regional or nationwide? What worked best for them to get out of the slump?

We're v worried it's the credit crunch biting, and we're going to have to start laying people off.

Any help appreciated!

Warm Regards,

Joel

Sorry to hear about the slow up in the work for you RS.

The normal chin wag at the wholsalers confirms it's slowed up a little for the larger electrical companies here just up the M4 from you.
Also been told that some of the local building contractors are getting slower at paying just lately, I've not experienced this yet but then I'm only in with one builder at the moment.

I seem to be doing ok for now lots of enquiries & bookings but then I am a one man band so none of the wage bills you will have.

Have noticed the wholsalers are now getting pretty quick sending overdue account reminders ( had one this morning for £14.76 one that slipped through end of last month).

What can you do?
How about getting some flyers made up (I use goodprint a online print company & use glossy post card size ones printed both sides) then get your lads/lasses to do a drop around the domestic area industrial & commercial sites or at the local diy sheds on a slow day. It's an idea

Anyway hope it picks up mate.

I've heard this too RS. A mate of mine works for a firm in Oxon and they have reduced his working week down to 4 days as work is drying up. A lot of companies are starting to feel the pinch and what is really worrying is the fact that in terms of a credit crunch or recession we are just only scratching the surface in terms of how severe it could become. In my experience the only work which seems to be safe(ish) and relatively unaffected is the local authority programmes. My firm has (among many other contracts) contracts to refurb hundreds and hundreds of kitchens. Safe work and actually very profitable.
Good luck and chin up. Keep picking away.

Not noticed any signs of slow down on the domestic front but poeple are being a bit more carefull with the dosh.I had to turn a full rewire down today that was due to start next week as it clashed with work i am doing for local builders, their just dont seem to be enough hours in the day at the moment but it could change.

Hi RS, sorry to hear the work's dried up for you.

I'm not that far away from you in Bristol. At the moment I'm contacting a lot of firms in the area, trying to find someone to take me on while I do my apprenticeship at Gloucester college. A lot of the time I'm getting companies telling me that they have gone a bit quiet so aren't taking on, or that they are expecting to go quiet very soon, so don't want to commit to taking anyone on. - The others, well, they just don't bother replying, or the was the one that said he was looking for professional staff, then offered me a job for half the minimum wage!

Hope things sort themselves out for you soon.

David

Things a bit quiet for me too (yorkshire), someone in the wholesalers said that the days of having 6 months work in the pipeline are over, for now anyway.

I've spent the last couple of months calling companies in Dorset looking for work as a mate/improver and that is what a lot of them have said - seems domestic work is the way forward, for now at least.

Hello,

I am not sure if this is the right place to post this up, but I help people with their visas for Australia and New Zealand and I thought I'd let you know that there are plenty of vacancies for electricians throughout the whole of Australia.

If anyone needs more info feel free to email me.

Cheers,
Veronika
