Default Apprentice/Trainee Advice Please

Hi everyone

My im Patrick and im from/live in Cardiff, I am looking for advice on how to get into the sparky trade, I have worked on site for years on and off and am looking to get a trade behind me, i attended college in essex as i served as a Royal Marine Reserve several years back, i was 3 months from completing year one and i got called up so i had to drop out.

Ive been back in Cardiff now for two years and recently quit my job to seek something long term and more so work that interests me, i have applied for apprenticeships with JTL and TWS and got an appitude test later this month but the thing that gets me is that they keep emphasising the fact that if you pass you still got to get your own employer so i realy dont see the need for them?

Anyway if someone could give me a little advice or point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Pat.

Yess well to get onto the JTL Scheme you have to complete the entrance exam, its pretty easy =) When u have passed write to as many companies as you can attatching a photographed certificate to your letter. When your working for a company youll attend college under JTL (= (=

Hi Patric

It would seem that we're in the same boat. I have taken my tests a few weeks ago now. - If you know how to swap a formula around, are reasonably comfortable with everyday maths and English, than you should have no problem.

Now, just like you've been told to do, I to am in the process of looking for someone to employ me during my apprenticeship. - I'm afraid I'm finding this a bit of a problem! I think you just got to send out a lot of letters, but also ask around anyone you know who has the slightest thing to do with the trade. A lot of the time when someone does want someone, they take someone on who someone they knew told them about.

Good Luck

David

Hi guys

Cheers for the replies

I just rang a few local companies in Cardiff in cluding Budd electrical and they told me that they are laying off apprentices at the moment as they are losing contract on site due to outside contractors taking over and they are not taking on anyone for atleast another two years.

Oh well thats put a lovely downer on my day, back to the drawing board.

I honestly cant understand why the goverment make it so hard for you to get a trade behind you, you would think there would be help for those who are more than willing eh!

Pat.

If you can't find a company to take you on straight away you could try doing it the other way round, like i did - start doing C&G 2330 at college by yourself, and then try finding work as an electrician's mate.

I'm not saying it's the perfect solution, but you may find it easier.

I agree with what you say about the government's lack of help though - they seem to want more tradespeople but don't want to lift a finger to help.

So.. i maywell look into another trade cos im certainly never going get into this one by the looks of it.

Pat, i am teaching people privately in Cardiff, many of them are picking up work straight away, not only domestic but commercial and industrial as well, including building maintenance type roles

spoke to one of my old students last week, took him through EAL DEI, 16th and then 17th, he is now coming back for his 2391

he is working doing rewires for flood affected houses in Gloucester

he is charging 200 a day, they are paying his travel costs, and he is making his usual percentage on consumables

its out there Pat, good luck mate
