Default Aussie Sparkie - Electrical License and Trade recognition.

Hi Everyone,

My wife and I are looking at moving to the UK for a couple of years. I am seeking information regarding trade recognition and gaining an electrical license.

I work for the electrical supply authority mainly doing hv industrial work, my license is unrestricted as a electrical fitter mechanic in Queensland, Australia.

I would probably looking at doing similar work in the UK, I could do domestic depending on licensing.

From what I can see there seems to be different classes of licenses in the UK such as domestic and industrial etc.

Which organization issues the Electrical license in the UK?

Thanks for the help, Dave

dave ,scary as it is ,within certain limits anyone can pick up tools and do electrical.
yes certain qualifications are preferred by some companies but no one is actually enforcing it
part p of the building regs can be worked around etc
dont get me wrong i dont condone this and would prefer all to be qualified and competent

Come on Wayne.

You can give a better answer than that.

I'd do so myself but I have to marinade my swordfish for tea...

(Did you know you shouldn't marinade fish for more than 4hrs as it can cause the fish to dry out when cooking? Also, meat can be marinaded for upto 24hrs and in fact, the longer the better.)

If I am right your licence, being unrestricted allows you to work on all low voltages (220, 400, 600). The Australian regs were initially inline with UK, hence Clipsal being able to launch easily in the UK, prior to them being bought out.

As Wayne said, unfortunately there is no actual legislation here regarding who can set up as a sparks and licencing, such as yours does not exist (mores the pity).

We have a couple of organisations who will give you recommendations regarding what qualifications would be beneficial to you, the NICEIC and the ECA. Both these organisations run courses themselves and both will no doubt try to sell you these but all their courses can be provided by independant training organisations local to where you relocate to.

I would suggest that you email these two organisations and then contact local providers, with regard to course availability.

When you get details of what they recommend post them on this thread and we can give you an idea of which will be the most beneficial to you.

Hope this helps a bit.

Bane, if you've used any lemon or citrus in your marinade do not leave the fish in it longer than a few minutes as it will start to "cook".

Hmmmm. Left it in for 3hrs. Tasted rather well I must say!

*Then deftly steers thread back on course*
