Shakey, the "even you" quote was meant in good humour.
It also seems I've missed the protocol and manners attached to this forum, again I hold my hands up.

Its not the first mistake I've made, wont be the last.
It is the first forum of any kind I've had any contact with, so apologies.

I'm not looking to kiss anyones ass, but am old to enough to admit when i'm wrong.
Please continue, I'll shut the door on my way out.
Ok, no problems,

like said, introduce yourself. It gives people a chance to see who you are and what you have to offer, or want info on.

Its not formal, it just gives more people access to the answer, and we all like to help

Hi Mitch
i fully welcome free speach, and as far as i am concerned theres no need to appoligise ,Shakeys right in what he says as well, and even though theres a difference of opinion at times there is an element of respect there as well, this forum is only as good as its members ,and the posts it gets ,when shakey had his last tantrum there was a noticable drop off
please tread carefully when you wind him up.he is a grumpy welsh man and sometimes things get lost in the translation and it would be such a shame to lose him again

like the others say introduce yourself properly and im sure there wont be any problems with you joining in

Thumbs down Re: JIB Cards & NVQ level 3 is a joke!!!

So after browsing through the whole nine blummin pages i'm none the wiser.

I'm currently doing my 3rd year in the 2330 and working in a food factory as a maintenance assistant, mainly buildings maintenance and small lighting/power installations but now i'm finally getting into servicing and breakdown fault finding.

I'm wondering which path/courses to take after i've finished the course.
The career path is very narrow where i'm currently working with no scope of moving sideways into something more intersting.
Assistant/engineer/senior engineer/chief engineer/director only progressing in the dead man shoes variety.
I'm interested in programming and new technology and would one day hope to get out of the food industry. Quite frankly it stinks and high speed production ain't good for the soul.

I don't want to work on a construction site because of all the other w@nkers stealing your tools, fighting, spitting, swearing non-stop. JIB sparkies are pretty low down the list as far as I can see. Scum.
100% agree. I will never ever work on a site. places are Full of meat heads with bread for brains and limited conversation

thats not strictly true though..... although it will help get you onto sites and big jobs with plenty of w@nkers round, in my experience it has been an essential requirement for any INDUSTRIAL electrical firms.

i certainly dont see mine as a way onto sites i see it as a way into factories.

image the situation.... from school you have worked constantly in factory environments so you may have experience with control panel building and wiring or maybe maintanence aspects...well that goes on the card as additional skills.

very handy for me and whoever chooses to employ me....its just the norm for me to be asked if i have it, im pretty suprised there has been 9 pages discussing it.

[quote=heathelect;17655]Warreng, you dont have to be a jib member to work on sites, you just need to do the health & safety exam cscs i think its called, its dead easy just commom sense, im a jib member and have been since i came out of my time when i was cards in, been self employed now for donkeys years, all jib membership does for me is give me a fancy plastic card that says approved electrician , and 16th edition on the back. (just enrolled for 17th)dont really know why i keep renewing it no one has ever asked to see it. Hope that helps dave

Hi Dave

I hadn't realised that this thread had gone so far, I obviously picked up on a sensitive area! So sorry for the late responce.

Thank you for the info. I had enquired about the cscs exam (40 questions on health & safety i.e. 'What colour is a fire extinguisher'? etc) but it is now organised through the JIB for electricians.

I think you can still do it, but it is part of the JIB application (I think) so I am not sure whether you would get a card (without NVQ L3) just for the health & safety bit?

tried to read most or all of the replies but there's so many please forgive me if i repeat something but i'd like to give my thoughts in as few words as possible

is the JIB thing good or bad - i think it's good, it doesn't always suit everyone (as we can see) but it's a good idea in general

the JIB doesn't declare you competent, or an electrician, your qualifications and experience dictate that. the JIB grading system is used nowadays as proof of competence, not saying you are comepetent just because you have a card, but; it saves prospect employers/contractors/clients having to look at all of your individual certificates, once they see you have a valid JIB card it covers a lot of clientel for insurance liability purposes or just peace of mind - not simply that they want 'the best electrician' or even believe that this is what it means.

it is unfortunate that they have decided upon requiring an NVQ3 to be graded as an electrician as so many formal apprenticeships use the C&G routes, but; their employers can offer recommended grades when applying for their cards and the majority of people get accepted on this premise, it's not all black and white

also:

dr rosenrosen said: The c&g is seen as theory based qualifications in there eyes and the nvq 3 as the practical work based skills side of things

does not mean that people with NVQ's are less knowledgable because of a lack of theory. i did NVQ's 2 & 3 as a part of my apprenticeship, but also had to complete ONC in electrical and electronic engineering & HNC in electrical power

so i hope you weren't insinuating that people with NVQ's are less educated

wattsup said: The JIB in fact pay cards in sparks union fees, to the now owned american union. amicus.

this stopped in january this year, JIB members now have to make their own contributions
