Just got home tonight, and the office phoned me in a panic as I was trying to manoevre the van down the drive. Aparently, someone installing central heating in a block of OAP flats had drilled through some cables and they wanted someone to check it out. Got there to find that it wasn't electrical cables, but the cables for the Tunstall system for emergency assistance. Tried several flats, to find that all of them were dead. Indeed, the whole block was out. The guy drilling the holes had drilled through the cables in several places. Impossible to reconnect them.

So, I guess that due to the nature of the system, someone is going to have to get it up and running tonight. Poor bloke - I bet he's still there now.

I don't know if anyone in the UK uses this expression or not, but in the US we'd tell that heating guy, "Sucks to be you".

All I can say is that there's no such thing as an unemployed electrician here. If an electrician is laid off (made redundant, as you say), he'll have another job within the day someplace else if he wants it.

For a good electrician with some time under his belt, 20 to 30 dollars an hour. Mind you, geographics plays a big part in the wage. A man making 15 dollars an hour in some areas will live just as well as a man making 35 dollars an hour in an area with a higher cost of living. Twenty to 30 dollars an hour is a decent range. Residential a little less (might top out at 20), commercial a little more (often over 30).
