Based on what I did,
First of all you need a recognised Electrical installation qualification. I took my City and Guilds 2360 part 1 & 2 which took 3 years in itself. This was a part time evening course at my local college, twice a week from 6pm-9pm as I still needed to work during the day.
you also need to know the BS7671 Electrical Regulations. So a City and Guilds 2381 is what you need.
These I think will be the minimum you need to be employable, although you may find an employer willing to take you on while you are learning. You can then go on to do as I did and complete a C&G 2377 P.A.T. testing course and then study for a C&G 2391 in Inspection and Testing.
Speak to your local college to find out where the nearest center for electrical training is.
