Hi, I am asking for my father who has gained BSc Electrical Engineering qualification in Iraq year 1991.
He is 60 years old currently and worked in Germany for 10 years as an electrical engineer and electrician where he had his certificate approved in Germany and was able to work there as a qualified electrical engineer and electrician.

He has moved to London, UK and wants to work here now, what is the recommended process he has to take, what does he have to do in order to become fully qualified here? I am not sure if this is the right path but he's told to do Statement of Comparability from NARIC UK and then do the 17th Edition from NICEIC.

Will he have to get the CSCS card and what's the best place for him to get insured?

Can he work here as an electrician if he was qualified as an electrical engineer?

To become familiar with UK wiring rules Dad should get a copy of BS7671 to study and do the City & Guilds 2382 exam. There are courses in this, or you can find places that just run the exam.

Thanks Wilko, it's not my field so I am a little lost as to where I could find such copy, I tried searching on Amazon
and it's giving me couple books.

He will need some sort of qualifications for this country, as for requirements in Germany I have no idea but the theory will be the same but the application may differ.
 
Re the books, all are good, but the "Big Yellow Book" BS7671 is the one that's got UK wiring regulations in it. The link to Amazon looked like a genuine one. You may find a cheaper supplier in the £60s. Really cheap ones are likely to be incorrect (and illegal) copies, there have been a few seen last year.

Edit : just search on BS7671 and look through the reputable suppliers and bookshops.

Thank you, and how does he then become approved by NICEIC. Is this done after doing the exam for the BS7671? or is this an independent step he has to take? Since I am seeing most become approved contractors by NICEIC.
 
There is a whole book to be written on the UK approach to Electrician recognition. But perhaps it's simplest if you just go to the NICEIC website and have a read. You will soon see the requirements for membership. There are several competent person schemes, NICEIC is popular but expensive. And you don't have to be a member of a scheme, but you do have to follow building regulations (part P is main one) and BS7671. There is also the ECS Gold Card for Electrician, and they have a mature age assessment that may be useful.

Volt, what are your fathers language skills. Can he speak fluent English? He could start to immerse himself in installation books pertenant to the changeover.
He obviously is a very educated man and has a lot to offer.
Has he thought about applying for work in his area of expertise then he would know it already and wouldn't have to undergo an enormous change with starting from near the bottom!

Edit- just re read and spotted the magic word Electrician - I thought it was all engineering.

He seems to have troubles understanding the English words mentioned in the BS7671, I don't assume it's translated to Arabic anywhere so he will have to learn some words. He just wants this as a way for him to be able to do electrical work legally in the UK and maybe try to get industrial work contracts such as design planning of electrical wiring for factories. He has experience working on large scale transformers etc. as well as handling of chemicals when he worked for a solar panels producer but BS7671 looks like it might take him some time to get up to speed with the language side of things.

I think Rpa07 makes a relavent point. If your dad want's to work here (UK) he might find it a struggle if doesn't have a pretty good grasp of the English language. A well written CV wouldn't hurt.

And, just a passing thought, why not get dad to post here?
 
I am confused, your profile gives you as being the same age and having the same qualification as your mentioned father?
You also have another thread going asking charging rates. So is this about you or your father?

He's not up to scratch with the technological side of things. In Iraq they teach the electrical course in English, he just needs to refresh his memory. :)

It's about him but I am collecting thoughts and advise to pass onto him.
