Discuss Trades Gateway - any feedback good or bad? in the Electrician Courses : Electrical Quals area at ElectriciansForums.net

if your happy to pay £7000 for training including regulations that have never been any use e.g. part p.

for a start the op that mentions 2357 doesnt include all the units for the nvq so its unlikely you will get a completion cert.

to go the college route of 2 evenings a week would cost significantly less, if you can't afford to take a massive paycut at least in the beginning then you shouldn't retrain.

I wouldn't be able to pay for the course at college or with trades gateway if I wasn't working away doing what I'm doing. I stay away all over the country so could not be home to attend the college the 2 days a week. If it was so simple to find a job with out qualifications I would but no one even gets back to me. I've applied for over 100 electricians mates jobs. Even ones that are miles from home but still don't get a reply. I would be happy to take a pay cut knowing that I'm gaining the experience but the jobs I'm applying for don't even get back to me. I'm ready to jump ship had enough of where I am at mo. But I need full time employment not just a couple of weeks here a couple of weeks there as that doesn't secure my mortgage. I know it's not easy but I've never struggled to find a job before and never had to really apply in my current industry as every body knows everybody. Everyone's going on about how much it costs but this is not a problem as far as I'm concerned I wad happy with the price for what I'm getting it's finding someone to take me on as a trainee and pay me a normal wage as I'm paying for course myself. The only trainee ones I've found are apprenticeship and then its 150 a week how can any body survive on that

I am doing the trade gateway course myself.

So far I have been somewhat impressed considering that I am doing the course myself. Now I cant speak for all others taking this course but I believe that my situation is slightly different.

For example, I already hold a BEng degree in Electronic Engineering and have had been working with electronics since I was 12. On top of that I do plenty of DIY work and am very capable of lifting floorboards, plastering walls etc. My end intention after this course is not to work for a company but become a self-employed domestic electrician (as well as free lance electronics).

I agree that this course will not give anyone enough practical experience on its own but if you are experienced in DIY and electronics then I cant see the harm. So lets say that the previous post is correct and that an NVQ level 3 cannot be achieved, the question is :

"Am I still able to perform basic electrical installations such as wire replacements and fitting of socket?"

If not I cant see why because a lot of the work that I have seen been done (in my opinion), does not require me to be an apprentice for 4 years. What I have gathered from electrical work, fundamentally, is safety. At the end of the day if you wire an electrical system all with the wrong colour wires in the wrong way the chances are the system will still work BUT ALL the regs and ALL the rules are designed to ensure that the system is safe (hence following the correct colour scheme, correct CSA and wire material).

And if people still disagree then my next question to them would be:

"How would I go about getting the NVQ Level 3 assuming that trades gateway is a lie?"

Re: Trades Gateway - any feedback good or bad? BAD

Hi
I started this course in may last year and everything was fine until I reached a point where they decided to slow me down
So when I reached health and safety module they failed me 4 times without any explanation in conditions that I knew I did well a day every time I had to wait 7 days to take the test again . After that they send me a hard copy on which I had to work a week and surprise I got 100 percent !!
All I wanna say is that they care only about money
I asked them several times to book my first practical session in December so I can split my work holiday but they didn't care and as a result they booked me in April! !!! And yesterday I've got a letter saying they are closing the centre in Watford and I have to go in Basildon in may in two separate weeks!!!!! I'm so frustrated whith thees people
So my advice I look somewhere else where is cheaper and you get real support

ive gone though so much with these guys it's a joke. I started in April last year, to then want to go full time and they rejected me and said that's not what they offer at all. I'm cancllling them under the Consumers Right Act and the fact they missold to me the course. The service was unsatisfactory and I want out. If other people are having the same problem I suggest you do the same. They've been nothing but useless for me and I too am going to contact Watch Dog

Re: Trades Gateway - any feedback good or bad? BAD

I'm doing the same course with this company, after i read all this posts i start to be scared, i'm paying for nothing? There is any way to cancel this course after one year? Or there is anybody ho finish this course, please replay to me. Regards

Patrick I really don't know why you bothered coming onto this forum for, you seemed to ask for advice about Tradesgateway and the course package you just paid £7000 for, but you already seem know the answer to your question regardless of whether you are right or wrong. You don't want to listen to anything anyone else who says anything that might be slightly negative.

I teach and assess on the 2357 NVQ and its far more complicated than what has been suggested to you, you can not simply turn up to help rewire a house and fit a consumer unit then expect to fulfill all the assessment criteria of the NVQ qualification. Each assessment criteria has to be done twice and on two separate jobs, you have to install 7 different types of cables which some will not be normally installed in a house, you have to install 7 different types of wiring enclosures which include Cable Tray, Cable basket, metal trunking and these do not get installed in a house. Apprentices take 4 years, my adult trainees are taking 2 years to complete the NVQ all working full time, the quickest I have heard is an adult trainee with XS training, doing it in 3 months.

Good luck with what you are trying to achieve and I guarantee you won't be back here showing off your JIB Gold Card saying we were were wrong, if you do then I will happily take it on the chin and commend you.

I give up here.

dude how do i get the work placement for the nvq l3. do the college provide it. how much is it and are you saying that once i get the 2357 i dont need the part p's or am2 or the testing and inspection certificates

hello,

seen this and dont think the whole course has been layed out to people. We do get NVQ's (we go away for weeks), if we dont get a position with in a company then we do it within a company that works with the college. The salesman should have explained it.

The reason i am doing this course is because i am currently in a electronic role and do with servicing and maintenance. However the elctrical side on top of what i do means i can get very good pay without doing Uni.
If you cant lift a floorboard or mix up plaster then i suggest not doing this course. All though you could ask to shadow electricians or plasterers for a day and you should learn a great deal. I have my doubts about this course as it's very practical work and the course is very theoretical. However, we learn the theory, then we have support through doing things virtually on a PC. I am almost coming up to a year and about to book my two weeks in Basildon i think after passing some health adn saftey course.

Going back further, did anyone else not receive the right documents after doing TMA11 to getting the TMA12, 13 and 14 stuff like BS7671? I had to wait ages. Then after i done the last one i heard nothing back and phoned them to ask what next, i find myself doing that after every step now.

Hello! I soon have practice, May 2. I'm going to the first week of practice. What to expect from the first week? What will be the tests? Thank you!

Hi all I am new to the site

I am also doing full scope sparky course with tradesgate way . I'm due to go to Southampton the first 2 weeks practical can anyone give me an idea or what to expect

Trades Gateway couldn't provide a ---- up in a brewery, that's my experience of this course. Poor tutors, stalling tactics on study material and an impossible (seems unless lucky?) pre-attendance test. You'll also find from people i've spoken to that you may have a practical week booked to have it cancelled at last moment. All in all not very good.

I'm doing my portfolio with them they have a house to re wire completely and do all the board change and that they also hive you software to put it all together. See if the ones in the list are the ones I need then the college is doing what every other college is other than the guys getting a job as apprenticeship and earning 150 a week. This is why I'm so Co fused there are loads out there. I called one bloke he said give me 3 grand come to my classroom for 3 weeks then my workshop for 3 weeks and your done and will be able to get a job as an electrician I said no thanks and he kept calling me back some where in Birmingham I was like sounds lime a scam and props was. At least trades gateway provide all the content course books regs books and so on for you included in the price and just for the course you do 9 weeks with them and then your nvq takes as long as you need to get it done after you have pass ed it all. I did what I thought wad best no I'm so confused my mate who was an electrician said I would be cool if I passed all that and would have more than what he had for paying 3 grand at college 2 nights a week while delivering for tesco
