Quick Question - Which course should I begin with?

Hi guys, I'm thinking about a career change to becoming an electrician. I've found some courses at my local college and was wondering if it was worth me doing the 17th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS7671) course before any other? Or am i going in too deep with that straight away? I have no...

EICR required for Part P installations?

Hi Everyone, I have been told that when I join a Part P scheme I have to complete an EICR form for every installation or addition to a circuit before I can do any work on the circuit. So even putting a new socket on a bedroom circuit I have to complete an EICR form. To do that I have to have...

    Substandard Cable

I was reading an article in the winter edition of 'connections' about counterfeit or poor quality cable. Apparently the 'Approved Cables Initiative' (ACI) reported a fall in the number of cables being submitted to them for testing. The ACI are suggesting complacency in the industry. They've...

    Holiday 2017

The Misses and I have been discussing what we should do for our holiday next year. Our son will be 18 and our daughter will be 16 having done her GCSE's. My idea is to go to Florida, rent a villa with a pool for 2 weeks and do some of the park's, Kennedy and some sight seeing. Ouch it's...

    Tests before alterations

I had a case today where, if I'd not done things properly, I would have ended up with exactly the same outcome, just saved myself half an hour or so of my time. Swapping a couple of horrible fancy ceiling lights for standard ceiling rose (landing) and integral LED light (bathroom). Upstairs...

    Neutral-Earth fault?

Can anyone help us with a problem? Since the summer one of our RCDs has been tripping every night at the same time (22:52 before the clocks went back, 21:52 ever since). There are two RCDs in the switch board: the one that trips has an outside workshop, upstairs sockets, downstairs lighting and...

Someone on the net posted a "buy a quote" thread, it seems this thread or post whatever you want to call it, not to sure where it came...

Mystery wiring - seen anything like this before?

Hands up, I'm just a domestic spark, but the gym where I train wants to put in a boxing ring and these are in the way. The cable is sheathed and I haven't taken the whole thing to bits but I've never seen anything like these twenty terminations. Apparently the building, which is on a racecourse...

    Supplier fuse query/DNO

Went to replace a consumer unit today and removed the service fuse. Lady from next door said her electric had gone off and sure enough, when fuse is removed it cuts off both properties. Rang the DNO and they said that it is not a problem. Surely this is unacceptable?
