Hi,

I dont know if this is the right place to ask, but I am sure you have more knowledge on this than myself

I am looking to buy a 12v inverter so I can use the car power to get 240v

What I am really looking for is a little understanding, I understand Current, but Watts im not too sure

The inverter I am looking at is 80w and the small compressor I need to run is 97w, is it the same principle as current, ie if I plug the compressor in will it try and draw the wattage and get very hot, resulting in my car wires melting, fuses blowing etc etc.

Thanks for any help and advice, its much appreciated

An inverter will usually just shut down when overloaded, and/or blow its internal fuse. If it is a rotary compressor, although it is very small at 97W (is it a fridge motor?) the starting current will be huge and you might need an inverter of many hundreds of watts rating to start it, otherwise again it will just shut down. Tell more about the compressor.

Also, note that a typical inverter will need 10-12A from your battery to produce 97W at mains voltage, due to internal losses. This is pushing it for a cigar lighter socket as many small inverters are equipped to connect to, and might be better connected to the battery.
