Good day one and all!

I got my SVQ level 3 (from Scotland) in 2010 but got work in another industry in 2012. I understand that there's now an amendment to the 17th and also a health and safety course to do in order to get the CSCS Card which seems straightforward enough to remedy.

Having been out the game for over 4 years, I'm looking for advice and opinions on starting an Ltd. to do jobs through agencies, potentially as a sparks mate to get back up to speed and then eventually as a spark outright.

I'm still employed with my current job as an ROV technician but with the ongoing hammering the industry's going through, the likelihood is it won't be for too much longer so I'm trying to be as proactive as possible before the axe falls and the pressure isn't on this venture to be my income.

Any thoughts or advice you might have on the process of re-baptising myself back into the sparky brotherhood will be immensely appreciated!!

All the best

DHB

Hi & welcome. :)

Welcome along.

As you are trained to 17th Edition it should be fairly easy to get back up to speed. Get the latest regs book and make sure you know the changes, there are a fair number of websites detailing the modifications from amendment 3.
If you want to work for agencies then a cscs card is probably a key thing to have.
Agency work is not the most fun but probably the easiest to get into especially as you are already competent.

Good luck.

Thanks very much Richard! It definitely helps to hear from someone working that the whole idea isn't a pipe dream after so long! As far as working for the agencies, how kitted out are you expected to be?

Currently I've got my KP electrician's tool bag, Battery drill and "heavy work" box (hammers, chizels, bits, etc.)

I don't have a van or car and live fairly central to London so hoping to go by the tubes to begin with and then if all goes well make that investment at some point down the road.

Thanks

Dave

Agencies would not generally expect too much, possibly safety shoes and they would like other safety gear as well (even though it should be provided free by the employer).
It sounds like you should have enough to start with, especially as a mate.
Lack of transport in London is not too bad as you cannot drive anywhere anyway!, but elsewhere it could be a killer.

Here is a link from the IET site to the changes.
It may not include it all lol, but it should give you the gist.

Good luck.
