I have a 2 year old Hoover dishwasher and a couple of days ago it started causing a burning smell. At first we did not know what was causing the smell but have now worked out it is the dishwasher.

Today I pulled it out and all looks OK. I sniffed the plug and that had the remnants of a burning smell.

Surprise the fuse box did not trip.

We called Hoover and they said £120 to fix it. No idea how they could know what was wrong over the phone ... they then tried to sell their £15 a month cover. We only paid £220 for it, so not going to pay them £120 to look at it or give them £360 over 2 years to "look after" it!

But, what I am wondering is, is it the dishwasher or the actual electrics? Is there a way to find out without putting a different dishwasher in there?

If I called an electrician, would they be able to diagnose the problem by, i.e. determine if a faulty dishwasher or something up with the wiring?

House only 12 years old, on a Tenby fuse box / consumer unit.

Hi Jon, yes is the answer, All electricians will have a minimum call out charge though but should be less than Hoover.

99% it's a fault on the plug/socket. get a sparks in to replace both. it only needs a bit of contact resistance between the plug pins and the socket to cause heat which then exacerbates the fault leading to more resistance, arcing, more heat , and so on. he can PAT test the machine while he's there.

one for dingledong, maybe. he's an essex boy.

Should be less than hoover? Gmes what the hell are you charging haha i'm going sadly wrong if a call out's anywhere near £140
