congrats on your new camera, looking forward to seeing more of your pics with it.
I've been using EOS cameras for a while now, including the 40D. It needs a couple of wee tweaks to get the best out of it.
One on the main things that's good to do is make sure the focus point selection is assigned to the "multi controller" (the joystick type button on the back). When this is set up right you push the multi controller to select the centre focus point, and wiggle it around to select outer points. AFAIK out of the box configuration with allow the camera to select the closest thing to focus on. Sorry in advance if you know this and it's old hat :)

Liveview - I've never used it on the 40D. I use it occasionally on the 5Dmk2 for landscapes.
When I make the required number of posts to be able to post pics I'll post some of my doggy taken on the 40D :smile5:
