Went to look at a CCTV install with my Lad last week, only there to keep kim company really as the job was in London, a word of mouth referral.
Asian Lady very nice but the house was a mess, not dirty or anything just stuff every where, no Husband, Daughter ruling the roost.
She wanted 1 camera at the front 1 at the back and 1 covering the back driveway, she had had a rewire, this is where it gets funny, all new sockets and switches, but the cable looke old, I mean really old, no bonding I could see, old Wylex CU rewireable fuses, shad already had CCTV but wanted it updated as the local street roamers had all but demolished what she had.
So me and my Lad get into the roof all boarded out, but all the CCTV cables let in situ but disconnected, The feed for the CCTV control gear came from the fluorescent fiiting in the loft wired in 2 core flex a run of about 8 mts, I wondered why the light was on in the loft so I had a look around to see if there was some sort of door switch, but no, so I asked the Lady of the house where the switch was, Oh I had to leave it on to work the CCTV, any guesses to why?

By sounds of it shes been had over by a cowboy spark. must have spent a long time changing the fixtures but left the wiring in...
was it the same spark who fitted the cctv?

Not too many years back there was a firm going around Cardiff doing exactly that, Cardiff city council had a contract with them. Must have done over a hundred houses before they were caught & disappeared.

I recall after coming out of mt Apprenticeship, I worked for a 1 man band for a, bit, work got hectic so matey employed another "Electrician" he was left on site by me to add some sockets to a new build, picked him up that evening, All done Pete, what's next, thought blimey he's quick, that was until the following day when we got a call saying my sockets don't seem to be working.
Had a quick look switched off took a socket off, gave the 2 cable a tug and about two foot of wiring came up the tube, all he had done was shove a couple of feet of cable down the tube (yes we used oval conduit in those days) and connected the sockets up, what a Div? Needless to say flooring up quickest Ring Final I ever did, he got the elbow.
