Discuss Dodgy meter keys and electric credit in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

Visited my cousin today and her neighbour recently had a guy knock her door offering her £50 of electric for just £10. They have a key they put in the meter that adds the credit on.
she said she was tempted but couldn't afford to pay it back if it all comes on top for her.
I have heard of this before but would have thought the energy firms would have stopped it by now?
I told her she would be found out eventually as unless I am mistaken when you take your key to the shop to add money onto it the key sends the amount used and various other internal data from the meter to the energy firm and eventually it wont tally up ie money added, power used etc.. and then they come asking questions and want the money they have been cheated out of.
Has anybody else on the forum come across these scammers?
How exactly are these scammers pulling this off? as i think it must involve some inside help from within the energy firms?

Well I have heard this type of scam, but did not know it actually works, till you get found out and have to pay twice, well well , thats why prices go up to pay for all this kind of theft.
