Hi all what is the requirement for surge protection in a dwelling if rewiring or upgrading nowadays have not touched domestic for a long time and wondered what is required to comply with bs 7671 on his now?

I didn't think there were any requirements for domestic surge protection. There'll be a lot of installs that fail their inspection if there is :) Daz

I think surge protection is only indicated where there is a risk of damage to high value equipment and the cost of the install is then worth doing.
This would rarely be the case in a domestic situation.
For the UK the incidence of lightning strikes is low enough that there is not a significant risk.
Appendix 16 covers SPDs.

My mate went on an update course with the IET (Seminar) and was advised insurance companies to commercial property's in the future will begin to demand SPDs as standard,
I would imagine if this is the case some point in the future domestic will be affected so I would consult the client and advise them, obviously consider the costs though but surely if the client agrees for the extra it can't hurt
