Hi

I am to put up a couple of independently activated PIR lights over the front and side of a detached garage. The garage has a fluorescent light and two double mains sockets fed from some RCDs (inside the garage).

I have some 1mm T&E cable and a couple of FSUs to be able to isolate each light.

Is it acceptable to daisy chain the live supply from one FSU to the other one with just the one cable from the RCD box and is it OK to use any internal junction box to join the flex from the PIRs to the internal wiring or does it have to be 'IP' rated? I have a couple of round IP44 ones to put some terminal strips in but also done rectangular simple choc box types.

On a different topic but still regarding lighting in the garage, if I were to add another fluorescent light do I just take the feed from the existing light (will be switched from the single light switch)?

Thanks

Hi mate.
You say "The garage has a fluorescent light and two double mains sockets fed from some RCDs (inside the garage)." Do you mean a small CU with a RCD and a couple of breakers or a CU wit RBO's?
Are you tapping into the existing light circuit?
Cable size should be calculated.
I don't see a problem with daisy chaining the FSU's.
Make sure all connections are accessible or use MF terminals. (Have a look at Wago terminals)

You can add another fluorescent light to the existing feed along as you want both of them turning on with just the one switch.

Hi thanks for the reply.

Yes a small CU (63A current rating iirc) with a main breaker and 2 small RCDs for mains and lighting ccts.

I will be attaching a feed directly from the lighting RCD inside the CU and up the 20mm conduit. Run is approx 5m to first pir and 10m to the second.

Looked at wago which are very simple but pricey hence the 6A terminal strip.

For now just one switch to light both fluorescent lights But.... Independently lit would mean much more work?

Thanks

wagos are not pricey for what they are. the extra materials cost is offset by the time saved and the peace of mind. and do you mean 2 RCDs, 2 RCBOs, or 2 MCBs fed from a common RCD?( the last is where a RCD is used for a main switch in a garage board. they usually come supplied like this. RCD + 1 x 16A MCB and 1 x 6A MCB.) a pic of the garage CU would help.

2 MCBs supplying two ccts. One main RCD switch next to them.

Wago are nice and quick.

just bear in mind that the push fit wagos are not suitable for multi-strand flex. for that you need the lever/cage clamp type.
