Went to quote for new electrical shower and they want to upgrade from 8.5 to 9.8kw. (I am a plumber boooh boooh) anyway, the cable is 10mm but the rcd is 40amp. I cant find a 45amp rcd its either a 40 amp, 50 amp or 63 amp!! can I use 50 amp? I will get an electrician in but just want to know if it is possible to get an rcd in which case it is a simple job or wether it is a new consumer unit needed!! Also what is an RCBO? may seem stupid but never heard of them!!!

I had an "electrician" last weekend not understand what the rating on a RCD meant. Apparently because I had installed a 80A RCD in a garden shed, I couldn't feed it via SWA from a 20A MCB in the house, the SWA should have gone to a Henley block! It seems a common problem.

An RCBO is basically an RCD that incorporates overload protection. An RCD will require a separate device to provide overload protection. The amp rating on an RCD is the limit that can be carried by the device.

I'm not going to pretend to know much about rcd protection etc!! what I need to know is can I use 50amp rcd? or will this cause problems? also are Hager still going? can I pick up Hager rcd from electrical merchant or have they gone bust?

You can use a 63A 30mA or even a 80A 30mA RCD. Yes hager are still available.

your electrician should have no problem getting the correct device (yes Hager is still going strong) but don't second guess what he needs - leave it to him to sort out.....

Sounds like you are mixing up MCBs with RCDs. The MCB will be rated at 40amps, not the RCD! Please just get a sparky in! Edit: You may well have a 40amp RCBO, a device which is essentially an MCB and RCD in one. Since you don't seem to know the difference, don't meddle with it.

1 has rcd written on it, the other doesn't!! also mcb's have a button on them!! never pretended to know much about them, just wanted to know if needed new fuse board or can get new rcd. definetly had 40 written on it and rcd written on it so don't think I am getting confused

Shower will in theory draw 42A, the over current protection would be OK at 40A because of the short running time of a shower.
10mm cable will have a current carrying capacity of over 40A unless it is in insulation.
As it is in a room with a shower it will need 30mA RCD protection as well as 40A over current protection.
This can be provided by and RCD and an MCB together or by an RCBO onits own.

Hager RCD: only earth leakage protection 30mA, no over current protection, maximum load through RCD 40A

Hager RCBO double pole : earth leakage 30mA and over current protection 40A, will fail if more than 3000A pass through it on a fault, switches line and neutral

Hager RCBO single pole : earth leakage 30mA and over current protection 40A, will fail if more than 3000A pass through it on a fault switches line only.

Hager MCB : No earth leakage protection only over current protection to 40A
