For a project at university I need a fairly intense light source for a fluid dynamics experiment, as the previous one broke. I've been advised a halogen source of around 50W should be sufficient, though as I am a mechanical engineer, my electronics understanding is very basic.

Through basic research I have found that a gy6.35 halogen source may be sufficient, and have found an appropriate bulb and bulb holder (see link), how would I go about wiring this so it is usable with a mains supply/some sort of source.

Thanks in advance,

Harry

That lamp holder is for ELV only (12VAC). You need a standard halogen lighting transformer 230-12v available at any B&Q or elec wholesaler.

Okay thanks. I've found some appropriate ones. Would I then need the holder that I have linked as well? And how would these all attach, ie. mains > transformer > bulb?

Cheers,

Harry

The pins on the halogen lamp should just push into the small holes in the ceramic holder. The 2 wires from the holder go to the 12v side of the transformer. The 230v side of the transformer will need a trailing lead making up with a plug on one end.

Keep your greasy fingers off the glass of the lamp by the way, use a napkin or piece of toilet tissue when handling the halogen. Obviously don't touch it when it's lit, they run at astronomical temperatures.
