Help! Damsel in Distress!

My immersion heater wall switch gets hot when switched on. Water heats OK but switch gets hot. So, until I know what is causing this, I obviously don't use it. Any advice most welcome pls!

a number of possibilities
1. it may be normal to get warm in use.
2. may be a poor connection or a tired out switch.

you need an electrician to visit to establish what it is and rectify if necessary.

More than likely a loose connection at the switch, get a Sparky in ASAP to take a look, if he is a decent Spark shouldn't cost more than a standard call out plus the cost of a replacement switch, less than £100 much less ask the Spark what his call out charge is, tell him the problem, he will probably have a new switch in his van, better that calling the Fire Brigade.

Hi Ratty27 . They can get a little warm but if its getting hot I would get it checked out. Could be a faulty switch or most likely a loose connection causing a high resistance and thus "heat" .

Is anybody else have bloke pictured messing around with a boiler in these threads? It started off for me with that threads Plumbers are great!

Many thanks to all of you for your quick response! I will get an electrician in to look at it. Just wanted to clarify that it is probably the switch that is the problem. It will remain strictly in the "off" position until resolved! Very much appreciate your advice - thank you.

You could also turn off the mcb marked 'Immersion or Water Heater' in your fuse board, if you have such a device?

often see 13A FCUs in this situation. a 20A D/P switch is a far better solution.provided that the immersion is on it's own circuit and protected correctly @ the CU.

estimate if it were me would be £65, including a test of the circuit to ensure there were no other faults.
