Hi Forum, I have a question and my electrician is on his hols, wondered if anyone here could help.

We need to ventilate an enclosed space within a kitchen island and I have chosen a small and extremely quiet 12v PC cooling fan as the ideal product to do the job, due to its low db rating.

It only draws .15 of an amp so I was hoping to use a standard 12v downlight transformer to power it, until I read that the fan can only cope with a maximum input of 1.8 watts.
Will a standard 12v downlight transformer supply too much wattage to the fan, or will it only draw what it needs?
I'm confused!!

Thx

Andy

the fan will draw what current/wattage it requires. should be OK. only problem might be if the tranny needs a minimum load to kick in.

Andy, a PC fan may be DC so get a 230-volt in, 12-volt DC out transformer, the fan will only draw minimum current, 0.15 of an amp. Check that it's not AC, if so get the same but AC out. Hope this helps. You may get this transformer from Maplins

Instead of using a transformer to supply the PC fan it would probably be cheaper and easier to just use a PC power supply unit.

A MR16 tranny would be cheaper, much smaller & easier to get hold of than a PC power supply. They are only around £2.50

All PC fans are 12v DC - go to Maplin like you said and buy a 12vDC transformer - cut the plug off it and use choc blocks or similar to connect to the fan.
Also check how often the fan can run for without overheating - to my memory the fans only run of a small amount of time - hence what they are designed to kick in when the PC gets to a certain temperature
