How to check the integrity of insulation?

This is basic stuff.....

Not trying to get out of anything mate, just asking the advise of people who have more experiance than me in a domestic enviroment.
As an idustrial sparks, all my work tends to be in conduit, truncking on ladder, so I've never dealt with a nailed cable burried in plaster. Different people have different areas of experiense. I'd never try and show up a domestic sparks for not fully understanding motors, contactors etc...
