Discuss I need an inline thermostat, but am stuck! in the Australia area at ElectriciansForums.net

I have trawled the net far and wide, but still drawn a blank.

I wish to control some heat trace via simple inline thermostat. So the arrangement will be: mains lead, connects to thermostat which in turn conncets to heat trace.

Can I find a thermostat? Can I heck.

Tried the majo electrical suppliers, RS, Newey etc., to no avail.

Andy ideas, anyone? Please.

It would work, I suppose, but it might not have the same appeal as a 'stat that could just 'be there' and not need, or look like it needed, fixing to a surface somewhere. The one I have in mind could easily be mistaken for an inline circuit breaker or some such (my description might be suspect there, mind you, but I just mean to say a device that would not dissimilar to a controller on an electric blanket- or a bit like that, if you know what I mean.)

Just to switch power on/off to the heat cable. It's self regulating cable, but the customer wants to be able to have a definite on/off capability.

Heater tape I used a lot off in the fridge game to keep drainlines clear after defrost cycle but like you said its self regulating so a stat will need a sensor on the tape but as it only has one heat whats the point a simple inline switch will do and you can make it as fancy as you like

But would that inline switch require a human being close by to switch it on/off? My understanding of the end-user is that it's going into a remote building, where there is noone around much, so it needs to be a stat.

Thats my point, it either on or off there is no variable setting, you need it on or you need it off it fuction specific, if variable temp is needed a variable stat is required, at the point where heat is needed, whats if for anyway perhaps there is an alternative method
