Hi Guys, we are currently trying to locate several SWA cables in and around our carparks. I have bought a Fluke 2042 cable Generator and Locator but am struggling a bit.

The Gen has 2 ports on the top, can anyone advise on where we connect these to the exposed (dead) SWA? We think there may be a break in the cable so currently getting a >500 with our 1652 on insulation resistance. Does the cable need to be complete (joined at one end) to work or can we do it as is?

Also the generator has 3 strengths, any idea which is best?

Thanks again.

Also on a second note (Apologies it has been a few years since I finished college), when performing a IR test on the cables, at 250v it gives us >200 straight away. But when at 500v is starts off around >120 and slowly climbs to >500, why is this (Fluke 1652C)

Kind regards

Connect the + terminal to a core of the non powered cable (or the armour) and set the transmission level to high if the cable is properly buried.

Use the receiver at the start of the circuit and select the sensitivity somewhat higher than that required to detect the accessible cable, as you move away you should be able to trace the cable location, if there is a break in the core you are connected to then the signal should be lost at that point. Then try again from the other end and if the point of signal loss matches there is the break.
