Hi. I've recently moved into new house. The meter box and consumer unit are installed in cupboard underneath the stairs, however they are approx. 1.5m apart and the tails are surface mounted. Should they be encased in trunking so as to protect them from damage. Thanks

No they don't have to be encased in trunking but should be adequately supported. Is this a new build with consumer unit under the stairs?

The tails are insulated and sheathed and are considered adequate for the use you describe as long as they are supported adequately
Plastic trunking would not provide much in the way of mechanical protection

Many are done like this, but it doesn't make it attractive. The back wall equipment could be "put in a cupboard" perhaps, which at least will stop all your kit being thrown at it.

As that CU seems to be A3, I seem to recall that Part M Building regs suggest the installation of brand new spanking CU should be between 1350-1450mm from the floor level. I ain't no giant, but I suspect that CU is mounted at a height below my navel;)

OP when was your property built and is this the first Consumer unit installed in said property?

I will agree with the op in that if it were mine I would fit some trunking to neat it up

What looks to be of concern is 2 items
1. The live tail from the meter to the isolator looks a little strained and the dressing of those tails are terrible

2. The incomer looks like someone has a wonky spirit level and eyes that don't happen to agree with each other
It also looks like its ready to be yanked out of its cut out, the junk strewn around may also facilitate its yanking any time soon
