MR16 halogen with dimmer replacement

Hi,

I believe this is a DIY job but do correct me if I am wrong. I have a number of spot lights MR16 50w which are on dimmers and I would like to change them to LED.
They all have individual transformers and I am unsure as to whether I would have to change the transformers also. Your advice would appreciated and also recommendations.

There are also 2 which are within a different enclosure as they are in the shower cubicle. I have just realised that i have never had to change those bulbs or transformers in all the time they have been there but I reckon they are MR16s also. Would I have to do anything different when it comes to changing them?

If you have halogen bulbs with transformers then it is very likely that the transformers would need to be swopped for LED drivers.

My advice would be to go for 230V LED lamps. This will mean that you'll have to change the lamp bases from MR16 to GU10s, but that will be much cheaper and easier than any other option.

Same consideration for your shower lamps. 230V is OK there assuming your ceiling is more than 2.25metres.

Thanks and you confirmed my thoughts regarding the transformers as a couple of online searches with retailers were not clear as to whether the transformers had to be changed or not.
Ceiling height in the shower is at least 2.5m so i should be fine there.
Have you any recommendations as to GU10 options as I am sure some are better than others?

second taylor's post re. 230V LEDs and ditch the transformers. the GU10 lamp holders are less that £1 each. far less than a 12V driver. several makes spring to mind. a good site to visit is LED Hut. personally I'd opt for 6 or 7 wattCOB or SMD lamps in cool white. the existing fittings over bath/shower will be a higher IP rating to prevent ingress of moisture. make sure that your GU10 holders come with an enclosed terminal block to connect to the existing 230V wiring. many og these holders /fittings do not require an earth connection so the cpc (earth wire) should be continuous throughout the cabling but can be separately joined and sleeved at each fitting. see pic.

I am assuming that I do not have to change the dimmer switches; correct?

you may need to change dimmers. buy dimmers with the lamps so that you can ensure compatability. also, the lamps themselves need to be dimmable types.
