Even with the sand it still collapsed!
I worked with a bloke on one trip, he did his time as a maintenance spark, we had loads of PVC tube to install, and he wanted to use a heat gun to bend it, quite put out when I started bending it with a spring.
 
sand does not whack you in the face though.
