I could see it possibly working with thick cable where the individual strands have quite good mechanical strength, but for finer low voltage cables the strands are so piddly they wouldn't have sufficient strength to achieve a good contact. Would be OK if you finished it with a good dollop of solder but wrapped and tape like that... I don't think so

I'll stick to the linesman splice with solder as well though

The joint is actually stronger than the wire with that method. When trying to pull it apart (and giving it some beans) the joint stays intact.
