Hi,
i am a 22 year old lad from Portsmouth and I am aspiring to become an electrician. I'm currently a deputy manager at a small supermarket so it's quite a change. But I would like to get a trade as sitting in an office doing paper work all day long is not for me. I am planning on getting qualified upto level 3 city & guilds spec. This will mean going to college and stepping down from my management role and into a part time position within my current work place as I still will have financial commitments such as car finance etc. Has anyone got any advice for me in terms of best way of getting trained up and gaining employment? I'd look at apprenticeships too but can afford a pay cut of that size. Any advice would be very appreciated.
thanks all

andy

lot of extra hours at college and helping out or even shadowing electricians

[h=1]City & Guilds 2365 Level 2 first off[/h]This will give you a Better BACKGROUND understanding than doing PART P course
then its Level 3 and 17th Edition. But finding someone to Help/Shadow is best thing
NOTHING beats hands on, as i used to tell the Ex GirlFriend oh well ..

I would (and i did but got F all Replys) email and maybe phone up asking for any one you could help out/shadow when you are free, they might enjoy the company and the help pulling cable.

Maybe see if you can get some HANDS on first, see if it is for you, dam lot of LOFTS and tight spaces and hanging on ladders, might not be for everyone. Also college not everyone gets on with going back to school, so take each year at a time and AIM to pass as you are PAYING. Always good to learn a subject before going on the course, gives you a better understanding to pass it and if you miss any thing it dont matter as much as you know lot of it already.

Hi dude, you are going to have to swallow a bit,car finance or not. At 22,your contemporaries have had a four year head start,so i suppose,my first question would be,"How bad do you want this?"

If,after a good old think, the answer is the same, then use what advantage you can.

If you have a management position, and better still your employer is one of the larger brands...they will have electrical contractors stuck to em' like glue.

Find them, contact them for a lead on apprenticeships/experience/whatever is useful. Do not tell them it is you.Do not lie about your age/experience etc.

Then jack, and turn up. Someone arriving in this manner, would at least impress me with their determination.

Research,research,research...find out what you can learn,college wise,how long,quals,etc.

Take heart,a change of career at ANY age,is possible, ask Mr.Trump...

And in life never use trump as a role model
"I can go out to time sure and kill someone and get off"
Sounds like some thing Hitler Stallien Pot... All the greats
