all depends on the use of the socket and the IQ of the muppets using it.

The answer will be changing in January!!

At the moment no, unless there is another reason for doing so such as feeding outdoors equipment. However, it is widely known that in the next amendment of the regs ANY outlet <20A will need to be RCD protected unless you can justify through risk assessment it not needing to be.

If the socket is marked up with a durable label to identify that is only be used by a skilled or instructed person (soon to come electrical skilled person ) and to be used to supply a specific peace of equipment then no need to be RCD protected it its being used by a numpty then protect it with an RCD

I fully expect that such standard-form documents,to support this, are printed and stacked,in readiness for sale. Warehouse managers all over the country, will be receiving faint praise, for only spending 50p on ebay,in preference to getting a spark in...:bobby:

pass the dutchie, man.

The spark cannot and is probably not qualified, experienced and in sufficient possession of sufficient information to do a risk assessment on whether an rcd is needed in a property over which he has no control, with a workforce he know little about, and, had only a basic understanding of what goes on there.
The RA is the duty holders responsibility, the spark can however act as a consultant to the DH, if they are competent and insured to do such consultancy work.
Remember that if it goes wrong, the DH will be passing the buck straight to the spark, and if they can't prove competence to do the RA & have insurance to defend their corner, then the ambulance chasers will be on to them like piranha on a drowning bleeding animal.
I would not hold out much hope on a self-employed person without adequate insurance, who can't prove their competence keeping their house for example.

In short fit an RCD on it as it will be cheaper than all the paper work :)

You ought to be a columnist for the Daily Mail. They'd love you. What's your take on the 28' of snow we've been forecast in our Arctic Winter ahead?
