hi, in part p, it says there is no socket outlet within 3m of a bath, however shaver socket is an exception, why is this, what the main difference of the shaver socket? sorry for this silly question.

cheers

Shaver sockets are 230/110 volts and are not SELV, remember Extra Low Voltage is 50V or below . A shaver socket has a double wound isolating transformer. This means the socket is electrically separated from earth, allowing you under single fault conditions to touch a live conductor and earth and not receive a shock. (Because there is no earth path)

Electrical seperation is the keyword.....roukel's post explains it well. A shaver light/socket contains an isolating transformer in which it's secondary winding is completely isolated from the earth of the supply circuit, thereby eliminating the path to earth for shock current.

Well I have stood on a rubber isolating mat and touched a 240v live conductor (Same principle ie no return path) and I didnt feel a thing not even a tingle. Mind you a sparky I was working with did it first, just to prove his point. All was fine until I shook his hand.:eek::D

Ps, NOT RECOMMENDED.

Just out of interest, has anyone ever tried out the theory, and touched the live of an isolating tranny?!

Never touched one, but measured it on a boat's shaver point that was being fed by a 2.5kW modi sine inverter. These have fundamentally diferent characteristics to land-based mains power.

The secondarys of that isolating tranny had a line-earth potential of more than 70VAC!!! Enough to give a tingle for sure.
The line-line potential was 270VAC.

Anybody measured the same on a household shaver point?
