Generator Control Module is basically the heart of the generator system it will automatically start and stop the engine.

So on an emergency generator it will have sensor to detect a power failure, close down associated ATS switches and bring the generator on line. It will also allow for the generator to stabilize before coming on line to supply the installation

It will also supply you information the running status and if any fault conditions, also not only will they supply information, it should automatically shut down the engine under a fault

It should also give an indication of an engine failure on start up Most units will have a front panel display which will give you a local indication of above, but many modern ones can be ties into a BMS
