This thread actually reminds me of a little tip I was given many moons and lengths of pvc conduit ago, and I would like to pass it on to those who don't know it.
Instead of tying a piece of cable onto the top the spring, first thread the cable down the inside of the spring and then knot it at the bottom of the spring. This method saves stretching the spring when you pull it out if it is tight and also stops it smacking you in the face at the same time.
