So so sorry if this board is only for professionals but hoping someone can help with a quick question. The wife and I just rented a "new" flat and are getting some very high electric bills. One thing we have never seen before is it has a "day/night" timer outside the flat down by the meter and also one inside the flat by the fuse box. Is this normal or could they be in conflict somehow? Lastly the "day/night" timer in the flat seems to have the normal ON at 24 and OFF at 7 but it also has another set of ON at 11 and OFF as 14. Any ideas?

We have electric brick heaters that only come on from 24 to 7 and our night readings/rate have been really good. We are doing some experiments over the next couple of day like you suggest. I read the meter this morning before work and gonna do the same tomorrow and the next few days/weeks.

Its the double night meter that has me baffled....is the one by the meter for the utility company and the one in the flat for our appliances etc.?
 
Before you go to work tomorrow turn the swiche(s) for the water heater off and note your daily consumption. On the next day turn the storage heaters off as well and note your consumption. Neither should be consuming energy during the day on an economy 7 tariff, this way you can determine if they are.
Often an E7 water tank will have two elements, an upper and a lower. The upper is a top up using expensive day rate electricity and should only be used on rare occasions as required
 
mhar - thanks so much. Yea we are gonna do some experments with the water heater but we have def turned the "booster" upper heater off.

Murdoch- below is a pic of the timer in the flat. We are wondering if the older couple who lived thereTimer.jpeg before us maybe had the heat on during the day with the extra on off on the timer?? Maybe ?The elderly do get cold. Strange thing is the one at 11 is blank and the one at 14 says off.
