Discuss Bonded external wiring to gas- should this be boxed in in the DIY Electrical Advice area at ElectriciansForums.net

they won't allow us to connect gas pipes. why should we allow them to connect bonding cables?

yep, there's no way that they can test to ascertain if something is extraneous or not. case of it if don't move, bond it. totally in line with the bang test.

If it's thick enough it won't even need the green yellow sheath, so if solar radiation cause it to fall off it's still fine:)but it may not be in this case.

The gas bond should be inside your house, quite why the electrician has ran the cable outside is debatable, perhaps there is some difficulty in locating the pipe inside your house

Do you have a regulation to support this?

Gas regs are max 600mm from the gas meter

Do you have a regulation to support this? The gas safety in use regulations don’t make any mention of it, they only say that where bonding is not present you should consult a competent person

Yeah OK, but he could have taken the bond straight into the service box, same route as the internal gas pipe.

It can’t enter from the rear of the gas box as the hole would allow gas to pass into the wall cavity should a leak occur in the meter box. The bonding conductor must enter the box from outside.
Where possible I bring it through the wall just below the meter box then straight up into the box.

Unless the gas seal'ith the hole, with some of their putty.

Hi rosalyn,
I feel that this is perfectly acceptable.

Preferably I would take the cable inside the house under floors to the meter, but quite often customers don't like there carpets and floors taken up.

Are your floors laminated, or tiled?

The cost implications of taking these up and putting back down or replaced is enough to go for the option of taking cable outside.
