Should I be okay with backboxes?

Hi. I’m about to hire a home improvements man to install 3 light switches and 3 power sockets. He wants to use backboxes for everything. He has great reviews and he was polite and professional when he was here. But I wonder if backboxes are standard. I live near Blackpool, England. It’s a very...

    Backbox not earthed?

Had a look behind a 5 gang switch in my kitchen and noticed all the earth wires go into a connection block with no connection to the (metal) backbox. Also no earth to the metal front plate (which I understand is considered best practice rather than a requirement). Should that connector block...

Screws on Metal Backbox won’t tighten.

I’ve been changing some sockets and the last one won’t tighten. They have used 75mm screws. The screw just slides into the lug. I’ve got a CK 3.5mm tap and tried that. Still no luck. Has anyone any tips or tricks? Or any screws that I could buy to make it tighter in the lug?

EICR Code for metal light switches with earth to backbox

Posting this more as a discussion than seeking advice, as I've already fixed the issue. EICR on a house which at some point had been 'done up' with metal face plates for all the switches. When checked with a wander lead R2 was within spec on the ones I tested, but when taking a random one off...

    5v inside a backbox

I’m looking to run some small electronics inside a backbox, with a partially perforated cover. Basically a temp sensor on an ESP8266 - it’ll run off a 5v supply (there is a built in 3.3v conversion on the board I am looking at) taking well under an amp. There are a bunch of low power small...

White accessories only for dual backbox?

Hello All Firstly, apologies for two threads almost at the same time - I promise this will be my last question for a little while! So I don't understand what is the reason or the reg for not allowing metal sockets on a dual, metal, flush backbox? Would it be a C2 or C3 (assuming both are on...

    Cables too short in backbox

Morning all. I am replacing a 1g socket, with a 2g socket. Because I cant (cant be bothered :tearsofjoy:) make the hole in the wall bigger, I am going to make it surface mounted. The cables are too short, and they do no stretch the extra distance to cover the backbox. Ive been told about these...

    6 cables in a backbox?

Hello Everyone Will be wanting a grid switch with 4xdp switches to control 4 spurs with a single socket on each. Ring main in and out plus 4 spurs of the switches equals 6 2.5mm cables. I've got a 4 module mk grid backbox - about 45mm depth I think. Is it possible? I'm thinking the 4 spurs...

35mm 1G flush backbox with some 25mm knockouts

Hi. I'm looking for a few 35mm 1G metal backboxes that have some 25mm knockouts on them. I've had them in the past (Rexton brand ones) from Tradesparky I think, but Tradesparky can no longer source them. None of the sites for boxes specify the sizes of knockouts so it's difficult to tell. I...

Fused connection unit mounted on metal backbox

greetings :) I’m taking a spur from a ring final. A fused connection unit will be controlling the spur. FCU will be mounted on a metal backbox flush in a brick wall. I’m planning on using a junction box to break into the RFC, and taking the spur cable to the FCU. My question is, do both cables...

    Extending 2.5mm in a backbox

Hi, Just replacing some kitchen sockets and the existing wiring wont reach the new sockets as the N & L are reversed. It's been a while since I did any of this as my qualifications are in industrial electronics. Firstly can I use 30A connector block? or Wago connectors? and if they wont fit in...

Flush mounted pull cord backbox and theories

Hi all, It just popped into my head about bathroom pull cord switches, do they ever have flush mounting boxes, every one I have seen has been surface mounted, and also, why are shower pull cords cut shorter, which I see in most places?

    Backbox earth points

Hi, What do you think of the earth screws that come on some metal Backboxes like this? Compared to this type. I prefer the type the second one because they feel easier and safer to work with.
