Hi all
Am doing 2394/95 at moment and trying to get procedure firmly stuck in head. Thing I'm getting a little bit confused with is with some of the vids/examples online some state to switch main switch on (obviously before supply connected) and others off. My thinking is that you might as...
Hi,
A quick question, maybe a stupid one .... but it baffles me ,and I cannot find any info on the net. If you do the continuity test on a lighting circuit to get your resistance values, wired in twin and earth, how do you the the value for the earth ? Obviously you link the earth and phase or...

In "Advanced Electrical Installation Work" by Trevor Linsley, he says that an earth electrode rod that is 1m deep will typically have a resistance of between 10 and 200 ohms. Given that fault currents can supposedly, momentarily, be in the order of 1000's of amps, this makes me scratch my head...

I'm still a newbie but here goes.
as part of my Elecsa assessment I have changed the outlaws 1970's Fuse board to a new 17th edition cu.
the wiring is still original as well. Due to equipment that I cannot get to or remove I bridged the line to cpc and tested between that and neutral. On all the...
Hi,
I've been doing some revison and came across 2 different equations for voltage drop.
The first one is;
Vd = mV/A x Ib x L divided by 1000
The second one is;
Vd = (R1 + R2) x Ib x Multiplier
The multiplier is to compensate the difference in conductor temperature at the time of the test...

Hi guys,
i have always wondered when doing insulation resistance testing is there a test you can do to see if there are any loads still connected (ie neons,equipment) to see if the readings are true or through loads connected in the circuit.
Hi All.
I am currently carrying out an EICR in a local hotel. I was wondering how each of you carry out insulation resistance testing during a periodic inspection?
For lighting etc I have used joining live-neutral together and testing to earth due to the unknown possibility of electronics and...
Hi,
How to test an earth electrode resistance for Lightning Protection System in the middle of large concrete pad? I cannot not find a soft ground for spikes to drive in for testing. Is there any other ways of measuring the earth electrode resistance value?
Thanks

I keep getting short circuit between live and earth. I can't work out wether this is normal or a genuine fault. Unfortunately I can't lower the floodlight to inspect further. Can only test at the bottom of the base. Can any one help?
Yo folks,
Not sure that this isn't the second post on same topic, first hasn't appeared. Apologies if so.
Ahead of altering upstairs lighting circuit to add a couple of downlights to an ensuite I carried out the usual tests. Got odd IR results. L-N >1000, L-E >1000, N-E 10!. Did a bit of...
Today I got 0.11 Mohm L-N>E at 250v then the same at 500v on a 6amp lighting circuit wired in the 70s which is the only lighting circuit for the house. Customer did not want me to remove the lamps. I forgot to ask or see a bell transformer or aerial booster. No faults known to the customer. MCB...
Hi gang
im currently testing a power station,
ive been told to use method 2 ie link live to neutral and test to earth on all the lighting circuits, which are all in SWA on tray with no switches in the circuits.
all readings ok so far, but the last couple are reading 0.00ohms.
these circuits...
Hi,
Can a heating elements resistance to earth depend on its temperature? As I have one here that trips the RCD but when checking the resistance cold there is around 1.5M ohm-7M ohm to earth which shouldn't trip a 30mA RCD. Putting pressure on the element doesn't change it and there aren't...
please could anybody explain why I am getting a high insulation test live to earth on a chandelier with 7 of the above lamps in when a lamp is removed the reading improves by 2 m ohms for each one.

Hi All
New to the forum. I need some help -I have been asked by my employer to carry out an inspection and certificate an existing LPS. I have as fitted drawings and the original test certificate.
My problems are 1) Never carried out one of these tests, 2) only 50% of the electrodes are...

Hi, We have a 1 tonne Paint mixing machine, what sort of test could I put onto the motor to measure the resistance of the stirrer as the product thickens up. At the moment we have to stop and open the machine to test the thickness. Would be great to just mix and have a gauge highlight when...
Hi guys,
I've recently just completed a rewire of a small 2 bed bungalow consisting of 4 circuits. I have tested the kitchen ring and it has tested fine, the same with the lighting circuit. On testing the heating circuit and general ring main, the insulation resistance between L-N on both...
I would like to get a better understanding of what the specific IR test results could indicate. I'm talking more about the below 1MΩ area. I'm talking about.. wet plaster, flooding (sitting in water), degraded insulation etc etc, I realise it wouldn't give the answer but it may help in narrowing...
Hi all hope everyone's had good weekend.
I am currently studying for 2394/5 and and getting used to testers/testing by doing abit around the house. Where the insulation test is concerned i still have a few questions. I have a 2 way lighting circuit in living room and although i know that i...
