Oh noes! Garage broken into decided to have a moan. Could not post in off topic, second post that will not get published.

Had my garage broken into a couple of nights ago. Took a lot of cable maybe £500 worth. Drum of SWA and offcuts, T&E reels and singles in all sizes and colours. Strange thing is nothing else taken! Tools were left and mower, jet wash and so on so I suppose that is good. Door wrecked with jemmy...

The hoary old topic of PME, TN-C-S and earthing rods (not TT)

Somewhere along the line I picked up a suggestion from a forum posting or two that the DNO does not like you to connect an earthing rod to his "earth" - even though it is effectively just creating yet another, local to your installation, earthing point for the multiple ones already assumed to...

A bit of a similar topic (Dahlander)

4kW Dahlander motor on Göckel G2 sharpener draws too much current evenly across all of the phases at slow speed (14 Amps instead of 8.5), keeps tripping. On high speed 5 Amps only. Resistance between all of the windings is 4-6 Ohm's. Must be evenly shorted windings somewhere, or previous owner...

The age old Grid switch topic

From what I can gather, these grid switches can be crap. Burnt out, poor quality etc. is a common topic I'm picking up here. So, which companies to avoid etc.? My fixer-upper house falls under the regs of new build and thus I need to isolate hidden appliances. In the kitchen, I was going to...

    Off topic, van security.

Hi peeps, anyone out there had deadlocks fitted to the lower part of the side sliding door of a Vivaro panel van (2009-14 model)? I've just had this work done, and I'm unhappy with the finished product on the side door. Sure it locks, but the cylinder sits on a slant (the back door lock is...

    Off topic - van logos.

Appreciate this is a bit of a "how long is a piece of string" question, but can anyone offer ballpark costs for basic van logo work to a Vivaro/Transit sized van, say two sides & rear.? Feel free to post a pic of your van and what the logo work cost! I plan to contact a couple of local sign Co...

Off topic - utility knivese utility

Guys, a small problem, but a bl**dy nuisance. I've been using an Irwin retractable utility knife for general work, but the blades keep pulling out of the handle when using it for say, trimming plasterboard. For tools in general, my motto has always been "buy well & buy once". So, any...

    HowStuffWorks and Grounding/Electrical Earthing Topic

Hi, I just saw this on the HowStuffWorks website "Toasters and other appliances having exposed heating coils should not be grounded, because grounding actually increases the risk of electric shock." This is nonsense, isn't it? See link: HowStuffWorks "Grounding, Electrical"

Off Topic for the music lovers, bit of banter :)

Best decade of music for you: 70s, 80s or 90s and why? Or indeed earlier/later? Like i say just a wee bit of light-hearted chat for a Friday night:54: My personal opinion would be the 80s (electro) as its where most of the 'dance' music these days was pioneered and a lot of good soft rock...

    two installations, one earth rod

A customer of mine has two installations (self contained barn coversions) connected to the same earth electrode. Each consumer unit has a 16mm cable connected to the same rod. I cant help thinking this is poor practice, but what regs does it break, if any?

I am surprised there are not more comments on the topic about `Part F Certification`

"Hello All", I am slightly surprised that there were not some very angry comments on the thread about `Part F Certification`. I have written some comments on there about what I perceive to be the situation in order to try and help the original poster - Shaun gold with the situation regarding...

Slightly off topic heating-related/green energy question

Hi guys. This is quite a long post, and perhaps a bit off-topic, but I suspect that this section of the forum is about the best place to start asking...... As you'll know, I am enthusiastic about "green" and "eco-friendly" solutions. I recycle, I grow my own fruit and veg, I have solar PV and...
