Discuss 2 Gang Dimmer method in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

Right, as I'm a bit of a 2-gang dimmer myself at the moment, I thought I'd post this here to help get my head around it.

I've come across a 2-gang dimmer (push on/off) which replaced a standard 2-gang switch, one switch controlling hall lights (circuit 1 on the pic), the other controlling upstairs lights (circuit 2). This is how it's wired:

(Switched lives sleeved, of course).

It all works, but is it safe? Is it correct, or a version of correct?

The brown of circuit 2 was originally stuffed in the common along with the bridge connection from common 1, and the blue was in L1 - lighting circuit 2 was permanently on, and not dimming. That's all I know (in fact, I'd guess there was also a switch upstairs for circuit 2, making it 2 way).

Perhaps this isn't enough information to say what's going on, but what's going on? I've tried finding wiring diagrams online for 2-gang dimmers with little joy...

(edit: I realise this all sounds rather gung-ho-dangerous-DIY, not my work you understand!)

(edit 2: rather than "common", the terminals were labelled with kind of crossed wavy lines. Same thing?)

...I think it's ok with permanent lives feeding into "crossed wavy line", and bridging the two, but I don't get why then running the L of circuit 2 from the same terminal, and switched L into L1 wouldn't work... Some too-obvious logical flaw?

I dont understand what the problem is really, that is a correct way of wiring two lighting but more the old way of doing things (not that i use it as i dont like the use of singles lives and also heard it causes problems with led bulbs). one common terminal has a perm. live and the other switch has the common feeding the light and l1,l2 are linked between the two switches.

Yer. Nothing wrong with that.

Full thing should be something like this....

...unless upstairs light has a borrowed neutral

Just remember that the blue switch/strapper wires should be sleeved brown at either end.
