230 supply to 110 outlet sockets

I was just wondering out of interest how from a 230 supply you can have 110 outlets sockets. I was in a work shop today and saw these 110 sockets that you can just plug your equipment into and I was wondering how you would wire them.

Would you need to wire your 230 supply into a step down transformer then wire your 110 sockets from that,

Yes pretty much so... their will be a quite hefty transformer mounted somewhere and out of this you get your 110v supply.
This is a very generalised reply without going into the layout, fusing etc etc

I did one ages ago on drop downs , Three phase , 110, 240, airline and air extraction unit all on one drop , Can't remember the name of the system though.

If we were in America it would be no problem. 220V = 110-0–110V. But in good old Blighty we’re stuck with using transformers.
The American system would be end tapped, not acceptable for power tools in the UK.

Essentially you will have a 230V supply (depending on size) into a wall mounted Tx. Out on the secondary side you will have a supply to another DB containing double pole MCB's protecting the 110V wall mounted sockets.
