Only what I do in college iv done minimal in work but that's due to the fact I'm only first year

I did it straight after and was also free luckily, I had a bit of experience work wise but not really testing side, they teach you it all on the course anyway along with what you have already learnt by then it is fresh in the mind. I passed my 2391 first time so worked for me this way, I also was doing the 16th edition course around the same time, both were 10 week courses 1 evening a week so plenty of time for it to sink in.
if it still free there wouldn't be any harm in having a go anyway, just revise revise revise.

That was my palm do it while it's still fresh in my mind and I'm pretty good with studying ect head down get in with my work best way to be

well heres my two penneth:

i got my 17th edition, my 2391 and the 2377-11 + 2377-12 in the first year i was at college...so:

the point is if you have enough experience in inspection & testing + alotting codes as found in an accurate fashion and are competant in testing single and three phase systems then you crack on...
