Hi, Does anybody know of any alternative to governing the speed of a 3 phase motor than a frequency inverter? Thanks in advance, Jamie

If it,s a "bog standard" asynchronous induction motor (most common 3-phase motor) your meaning, a frequency converter is the only practical method. There is other more specialist 3 phase motors that can be controlled by other means but these are not very commonly used. Frequency converters are by far the most common way of controlling the speed of an AC 3 phase motor.
You can control them via a potentiometer yes but depending on the make/model you can get a range of operator panels to give them better control and feedback on key parameters. Is the motor existing or to be sourced?
Thanks, yes this is what I thought was the case, i am thinking that the frequency inverter can be controlled via a panel mounted potentiometer
Yes it can easily be controlled via a potentiometer and since the motor you want to speed control seems pretty small, it would not cost more than a couple of hundred pounds to source/install
The motor is already in place D.O.L. , the budget is the main issue here, I wouldnt think that there will be any need for feedback or any kind of ramping up/down of speeds, just a means of governing the speed of the bandsaw blade for cutting different materials
