I was looking at my battery powered Christmas tree lights and was getting a little fed up with constantly changing/looking for the appropriate batteries (3 x 1.5 volt AA, in this case) I then came up with the idea of using an AC Converter Adapter to DC 4.5V 1A Power Supply. I guess that will work? Don't want to buy one without consulting the great minds on here!

No reason why not providing the dc voltage is correct and 1A is adequate to power them.

Use a USB power supply (phone charger), (5V), with a 1N4007 diode in series with the output to drop the voltage slightly.

To connect it use an old USB lead, cut the other end off and use the red and black wires. The diode goes at this point.

I note that the plastic holder that contains the three batteries also has a two pin socket to the right of the exiting wires. An input for external power perhaps. Anyone know what this kind of socket is called?
