Hi, this burglar alarm is not required, can I disconnect the burglar alarm and connect cable to a double socket instead?

It's a grey metal box with on off switch in the middle, MEM sticker on it. Only one cable coming out the top which is straight into burglar alarm

i'd say that that is a complete mess and advise calling in an electrician.

New house, electrics have been done recently, the burglar alarm is the only thing connected to the box and it's in off position. If I turn it on power goes to the alarm system but I'm going to remove it. Options are connect it to a double socket if safe, if not, connect it to a dead end and leaving off position

Looks like the switch to power the burglar alarm is connected directly to the meter, get a sparks in to sort it out properly by removing what isn't required and then wiring in a socket from the CSU.

OK, I understand not DIY to attach a socket safely. If I wanted to remove alarm could I not keep switch in off position, cut cable and connect it to a blank junction box?

Indeed, get someone in. There’s two tails going into the meter terminals and that ain’t right.

Have the electrician completely remove the grey switch fuse and all the associated cabling. If you want a socket it must be RCD protected. Have the electrician provide one from that nice new consumer unit in the photo.

How are you going to prove the cable you intend to cut is isolated?

I think you’d be better off getting an electrician in and having it all stripped out back to the meter .....can’t believe they’ve left that in place!

Surely the fuse is in behind the cover of the MEM unit. There's no RCD protection for a socket outlet however.
