I need to add a couple of extra double plug sockets in a room in my house, was looking to run off existing plug sockets. I've been told by a friend (newly qualified electrician) that i need to use fused sockets, is this the case, have been looking on internet and can't seem to find double fused sockets hence my query regarding my friends advice?

thanks
Nick

I think your newly qualified Mate may mean you need to fit a fused Spur ( fused connection unit FCU) to the ring to feed your extra socket outlets, ie spur to a FCU and the add as many sockets as you wish as the 13 Amp fuse in the FCU will be covering any extra loading. To add I wouldn't try doing this by yourself, as the addition or alteration to an existing circuit will need testing and certifying, get your Mate to do it for you.

Not being funny but can you not get your mate to do the work. What your mate is saying is that you would need a fused connection unit before the additional sockets. Again this all depends on the existing set up whether it is a ring final or a radial and how many additional socket outlets you are planning to add and the list goes on.

The thing is it's very easy to get it wrong if you do not first verify exactly what setup you are extending with your additions. Whilst it may look nice and work you may inadvertently cause a serious safety issue on the circuit if you don't get it right.

thanks for the quick replies....my mate hasn't got much practical experience and rightly feels it would be out of his skill set to do plus he hasn't the funds to invest in a test meter yet. I've done my level 2 which only covers the basics and I don't feel confident enough to crack on without sound advice. I have considered the issue of what i'm looking to work from, i.e. ring or radial...i don't feel i've enough knowledge to work that out really...i guess the general advice here is that i get a pro in?

Or an Electrician, depending on your mood

Probably the best idea if you or your friend aren’t sure on how to complete the works or able to certify it.
